Owning a few groups myself, I have seen how easy it is for a group to suddenly just die and all the characters and topics seem thin and weak. There are a few reasons for this though, or well some that I have noticed:-

Members are regularly pushed out of a topic
Members get involved with just one other character
The adventure is all very plain with no action or drama [we all know a good television program needs a bit of drama to keep it alive and popular, well so does a group]
Too many rules, being overly strict can actually put a person of a group.

Role playing to me is about being able to let your mind go and be free in a world that does not exist. It's about letting the imagination go and writing whatever you want. Many peoples characters reflect themselves. I know each of mine do.

It is very easy to get use to role playing with one person so that when someone else comes along and joins in the topic you disregard them and ignore them. Try not to do this, its the quickest way to make someone feel left out and if you come to roleplay with them they are likely to do the same back.

Everyone loves a good romance, and we all often, at some point, patch and pair our charrys up with another persons, but this is no excuse to just have your two characters in one room doing couple stuff and that is all. you will find you miss out on a lot of other topics and adventures this way and when you join in people will just think your there because your bored.

If you see a new topic that has been posted, maybe its been posted for a day or two, and no one has replied to it, then take a chance and reply to it. You may just find that the topic is not what it seems to be and it will give you a chance to experience role play in many different ways and aspects.

DON'T DO THE WHOLE ONE LINE THING. try to be clear and detailed as possible with your replies. one liners merely make the roleplay die quicker because it really is very difficult to reply to them. Try to be imaginative, describe your charrys movements, thoughts, feelings and opinions. it will keep peoples imaginations running to help them with your reply and therefore keep the topics active.

Make the topics interesting, its not fun if its just a character sitting and doing nothing because their having a bad day, why are they having a bad day?

Too many strict rules can scare people of, especially when there things like "only two posts on the board per person" you are only giving them two chances then to express themselves and make new scenes for there character.

AS A GROUP LEADER:- you should be friendly and dedicated to the group. Don't put on the boss crown just because you own the group, be a part of it and take away any ranks, be a normal members like the rest of the group. You only need to put on the leader hat when there is a problem to sort.

Now have fun in trying to keep your groups active

    Great job !!!!
It seems that you can become a very good leader
  • This really helped, thanks
  • hmm...I tend to think a lot of groups suffer from not having enough rules or not being clearly defined. People feel more comfortable when the know the framework of what they can and can't do.

These things drive me away from a group:

    1. I can't figure out how to work my character into a scene and/or don't want t interrupt a scene in progress by introducing my character. I tend to think of RP's as being sort of like novels, and I would hate for a random character to just enter a scene in a novel I was writing, so I try not to do that with my characters.

    2. If no one else is doing anything, and I can't think of a way to stir up action.

One thing that I do think kills groups is the leader not knowing how to insert action or an element of tension. I've started up a group, the Rathleigh Clan, and, even though I've done my best to instill conflict in the story from the beginning, I know it will need a constant feeding of conflict to keep people's interest. I hope I can manage that.
